Buying mattress offline for me is a time-consuming task that involves several things I’m sure you don’t have time for, one of which is loading and unloading and that too at a reasonable price. Pay for parking, pay for transportation, and still if you end up not getting the comfort you are supposed to, well there go some curse words.

Online is no different today with all these brands fake marketing to show that they are the best in the market, but hey, please be practical, we are talking about your comfort here.

First things first, set your mind straight to your need in context to your sleeping habits, any medical condition, mattress size, type of mattress, and most importantly your budget.

Now at second get introduced to the types of mattresses available

Types of mattresses available

Coir Mattress

They are firm hence good for spine/back

Offer longer Life Made of natural material

can be customized according to your needs meaning more layers can be added.

Spring Mattress

They are made of coils that have springs in them providing bounciness.

Coils can tear out so they have a shorter life span.

Easier on the pocket but may cause body pain.

Flipping of mattress periodically is necessary.

Foam Mattress

They can adjust themselves according to your body shape.

However, if the foam is of poor quality it can have a pungent smell.

There is no air circulation so they can retain body heat and cause sweats.

Longer life span of up to 20 years

Latex Mattress

They are made of more natural material than coir mattress.

Softer and last longer.

They do not sag like memory foam and does not bounce like a spring mattress.

Excellent airflow property ideal for warm humid climate. Heavier on the pocket with a medium life span.

Now there are upgradations to these above-mentioned mattresses. These mattresses are improved by combining two mattresses to give more comfort and hence more options.

Memory Foam Mattress

Same features as foam mattresses except it does not sag and adjust to your body shape evenly.

Rebonded Foam Mattress

This is an alternative to the coir and has a sturdy structure. Easily takes heavy loads means good for a person above 80kg.

Last longer without any sagging issues and is used mostly on medium firmness/orthopedic/spine care mattresses.

Rubberized Coir Mattress

This is coir with latex (rubber) this is much more firm than memory foam or memory latex foam mattress.

Orthopedic Mattress

They are created by a combination of mattresses available.

They can be extra firm to support people with back pains and also for pregnant women.

Size Of Mattress Matters

This is officially the third step, the size of the mattress available in India is different from that available in other countries. So please read the buying guide made for the Indian market so you do not get confused with options such as Twin, Full King, California king etcetera.

Single Size

Standard size is (72L x 36W) inches which is ideal for an adult and a child.

Double Size

78L x 48W inches ideal for heavy adult. Usually in india we do not buy double size mattresses and buy two single size mattresses for double bed instead but there are options available.

Queen Size

78L x 60W inches ideal for a couple and couples with small kids.

King size

78L x 72W inches ideal for I think everyone who needs more space, certainly I do too.

Thickness / Comfort

Still with you and here goes the fourth step, thickness ranges from 4 to 16 inches with 16 inches mattresses being expensive as ever so they are not recommended unless you run a hotel or something.

Comfort ranges from extra soft to extra-firm with soft medium and firm coming in between.

Firmness neither impact mattress lifespan nor have any health benefits, these things are just marketing concepts just like sleeping pattern.

Also, I would never buy a mattress based on my sleeping pattern cuz I do not know how do I sleep and I don’t want to know.

Our Recommendation:

Heavy people(80kg): Extra layers are added for their comfort so go for latex with minimum 10-inch thickness and people with body aches need extra firmness so go for a combination of latex and memory foam mattress.

For kids(0-5): Do not buy PUF filled mattress, spring mattress because springs can tear out of mattress causing injuries to kids when they bounce over the mattress.

There is no best mattress for people with kids, couples or singles, it is just our choice like we don’t buy a double mattress for our double bed and buy two separate single mattresses.

Mattresses Features

This is a GK (general knowledge) section.

Hypoallergenic foam top mattress or Anti-allergy mattress is the mattress that prevents dust mites penetrating the surface and settling within. This helps to prevent allergy and people who are prone to dust disease.

Memory Foam Top also known as foam top mattress is the one which has an extra layer or sometimes in-built layer of foam at the top of your regular mattress.

Reversible mattress has two different layers on top and below the mattress, either of which can be firm or soft (hard or soft) so you can use them either way.

Reinforced Edges mattress has double stitches at the corner of the mattress to avoid faster wear or tear.

Pillow Top Mattress comes with an additional layer towards the top giving a pillow-like feeling.

Mattress Maintenance

Periodically flip your mattress I recommend once in every 3 months.

If you happen to have a vacuum cleaner then use baking soda for getting rid of smell or body odor, vacuum the banking soda after sprinkling it, make sure it reaches the fabric.

Use baking soda for urine stains as well.

Every time you spill something like tea or coffee, quickly clean the mattress with normal water and use washing powder to clean your mattress off.

Always use a mattress cover, always buy while buying your mattress so do not regret it later.
